Steve Castlen is a retired Army Colonel, former Circuit Court Judge, and long-time legal leader whose career has spanned continents, courtrooms, and classrooms. After 33 years of service in the U.S. Army JAG Corps—including roles as prosecutor, defense counsel, general counsel, Staff Judge Advocate, and professor of administrative law—he capped his civilian career by serving a decade as Clerk and Court Administrator of the Georgia Court of Appeals, retiring in 2024. His lifelong fascination with history, faith, and the lives of extraordinary people led him to write St. Helena: The Most Influential Woman in Human History. Blending a trial lawyer’s search for evidence with a storyteller’s imagination, Castlen invites readers to reconsider the foundations of Western Christianity through the remarkable life of a woman who rose from obscurity to shape an empire. Outside of writing, he invests in organizations in East Africa that support job creation and economic opportunity—work that reflects his belief that faith and service should extend beyond the page. These days, when he is not researching his next historical venture, Steve enjoys traveling with his wife, spending time with his children and grandchildren, exploring bike trails, and occasionally getting lost in a good legal argument with no judge in sight.
