Eat Pray Love meets American Psycho in a seductive and sinister debut literary thriller.

Food critic Dorothy Daniels indulges in her homicidal urges by murdering her lovers and devouring their organs in this intense, visceral, and lushly told tale of food, sex, power, and the pursuit of a very particular taste set between New York and Italy.

A man-eating journey of self-discovery
"Based on the promotional pitch for this new Audible Original—"Eat Pray Love meets American Psycho"—A Certain Hunger could have been written just for me. But so loud was the collective gasp in the room when the project was announced, it’s clear a lot of us were hungry for the story of a female cannibal on a self-actualizing voyage of homicidal hedonism. Chelsea G. Summers’s debut novel follows food writer Dorothy Daniels—the epicurean lovechild of Elizabeth Báthory and the vampire Lestat, if they were fluent in New York media and wrote Nabokovian prose—on a lascivious romp from the cocktail bars of Manhattan to the truffle-hiding hills of Italy. Somewhere along the way, she’s landed herself in prison; perhaps it has to do with her (literal) taste in men? Provocative and very funny, A Certain Hunger is narrated by veteran performer Hillary Huber—just the right icing for this bloody, decadent cake."

A Certain Hunger was the literary equivalent to a car wreck on the side of the highway: you know it's grisly stuff, but you can't pry yourself away from it. Dorothy Daniels is deliciously heinous: like Dostoevsky's Raskolnikov but without the fevered conscience, like Camus's Meursault but with a taste for more victims than a couple of Arabs, like Süskind's Grenouille but leading a life of decadence, instead of seeking the innocence not-yet-lost. At times, you will be repulsed and yet, sympathize with the protagonist.
This book is well-written and well-narrated, made you see, feel, understand, and taste the innermost emotions and thoughts of a psychopath. The very implausibility of it makes it a compelling read and takes one into a world where the sense of taste overrides any moral code. I'd say it must be one of the weirdest books I have ever read, but I enjoyed it immensely.

The perfect brain candy book

Chelsea Summers wields language like an exquisite and devastating instrument. I binge listened -- not just for the sex and bloody murder for the dead honest portrait of female friendship

Exquisite as a bomb

This is NOT your average story. It's a salacious tale of murder, excess, female friendships, cannibalism, GenX America, sex, and the world of food writing. The story is tight and perfectly hooked to keep you listening for more. The prose is luxurious with details, and even print media gets treated with orgasmic delight.

If you're into sex, food, revenge, and the kind of writing that'll get you drooling, this is for you. But beware, there's murder. Lots of very cheerfully written murder. You won't look at food the same way again.

The narrator navigates it all with aplomb and superb Italian pronunciation.

A delicious tale ... not for the faint of heart

The main character is so charismatic that I couldn't help but care about her! I mean she is a horrible person! but so funny and so authentic and raw... a really fun ride. I'll be reading this again =D

I didn't expect to LOVE this as much as I do!
