My best friend warned me about the end of the world.

Growing up, she was the girl down the street. Even then, I knew she was different. She was tough, rough, and had the strength to stop a speeding car with her bare hands. We were as thick as thieves, sharing every adventure.

Then one day she revealed a secret. She wasn't from Earth. She was from a distant place called the Arcadia Multiverse.

Her people lived under the rule of a god-like entity known as the System.

That System had its gaze fixed on Earth. And it was only a matter of time before it came for us.

But long before the System arrived, she vanished, leaving behind only a strange token that now dangles around my neck.

Yet, her parting words stayed with me. The System was bound for Earth. And when it came, I'd be ready for it.

I would triumph over this System and the new world it brought with it. And then, perhaps, I'd see my friend again.

From the author of Paladin of the Sigil and the Spellheart Series, delve into this thrilling LitRPG Apocalypse and prepare for the end of the world, teeming with monsters, magic, and lovers aplenty. Coming to a universe near you!

This book gets a triple A, for "Amazing Amazon Apocalypse." 😜
Is it just me, or is Knight getting better and better?
There are a ton of books with universal systems adding Earth to "the game of reality" that's been going on forever and adding earth in an apocalyptic way, but Knight does it in an original and interesting way. This is a GREAT addition to the subgenre.
The characters are deep but not too deep.
The leveling system is good and not crazy overpowered.
The harem relationship and its "spice" is very light and towards the end.
My biggest, and pretty much only, complaint, and I'm hoping it was just my edition of the audiobook, was that the female narrator's part was so much quieter than the male narrator that I missed a lot of the female speaking, especially when she was talking quiet for effect. If I turned it up to hear the female parts at normal volume, then the male narrator was too loud in my headphones.
I was gifted this book with the expectation of an honest review.
I absolutely do love this story and can't wait for book 2.
I give this book 8 out of 5 stars.

Wow! Loved it!

The first half of the book was good it even started out perfect. But I really don’t care for the MC.

He gets information that’s supposed to help him but he barely even prepares for what’s to come. And when things kick off he doesn’t even tell his allies about what’s going on. Then he teams up with an enemy!?!? I understand there was a bigger threat coming but what exactly did he think was going to happen?

Then he’s far too cocky. Sakura’s supposed to be a strong damage dealer but he has to take levels from her just to say “she’s weaker than me”. Then when he ran into that tiefling family. He pretty much harassed them because his level was higher just because they weren’t human…

Then the situation with Bridget was weird because she cared about him and even tried to be brave for him and the moment she got hurt he abandoned her. Then he said he “finally saw her as a woman.” When he saw her fighting with her new ability. And even then he was still ready to abandon her again. He didn’t deserve her.

He basically took control of the area passed the responsibility on to people who I’m sure didn’t want it and just disappeared because of the death curse (which we basically forget about and it doesn’t seem like a real threat.)

And he basically broke every promise he made to those people who pretty much sacrificed themselves for him.

And why does it seem like his party are the only ones that can level up? I’m sure the people in the city were doing a lot of fighting but they were still at the same level when he returned.

I’m interested in the next book though

I really wanted to like this book. The mc has a problem with letting problems fester, Normally I'd equate this to the audience having more information than the main character. But in this case, he actively ignores people who will clearly become threats because he doesn't want to deal with responsibility. You think he'd learn his lesson after the first time, but he clearly is incapable of doing so.

Bad decisions.

Marvin Knight did a great job with this. The characters are fun and in regular LitRPG fashion the classes are strange unique double edged swords where the MC has a potential powerful class that no one knows about but with so many unknown quirks they have to figure out along with the reader. One of the villains were a bit over the top but it did create good tension in that portion of the book. I'm not sure if it's me or the author but I did sometimes feel the stats and rules of the system weren't always applied consistently and sometimes increases didn't come when expected or stat numbers deviated from expectations. Again, it might just be me missing something or maybe explicitly mentioning a change was left out. It was mostly great though so it's only a minor issue and one that I feel is fairly common in LitRPG especially if there isn't a strict and meticulous spreadsheet being used. I did feel like a certain drawback to the class didn't feel as debilitating as the description would suggest but it could be argued that the MC just managed it well. Thumbs up for not spamming full stat sheets every chapter to pad the page count; it really doesn't work in audiobooks and ruins the pacing.

The narrators were great as usual. Only one minor objection: there was a single POV shift chapter where I felt it would have made more sense to switch to Jessica narrating when the POV is a female character. It's a judgement call and I guess the reasoning was to keep it consistent with the rest of the book, especially given it was only one chapter. Maybe I'm just biased because I adore Jessica and her performances.

Great litRPG adventure

This was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Definitely worth the credit.
