As I said above, I disliked the dual narrators and the voice given to Apryl was jarring and unpleasant. It really feels more like a story about Seth than Apryl, she’s almost relegated to a side character and she’s never fleshed out at all. We seem to get snipits of backstory from her viewpoint but honestly, this is a story about Seth.

The prose is beautifully written and it’s not a hard listen it just feels disjointed and the whole “friends of” chapter really could have been an email.lol (She could have told Miles about it afterwards.)

I sort of thought we’d get a follow up on Apryl in the epilogue, but no, just more Seth which only served to me, to make it feel incomplete. I’m disappointed.

I think the format the story is told in is strange. the female protagonist is read in a slightly grating tone, but shes from Jersey, shes supposed to sound like that. I love mystery and horror, but not body horror, and I had to do several bouts of skipping over the author laying it on thick describing aged, rotting, deformed bodies of people. I almost disliked the book, but the mystery kept me entertained and engaged to the end.

The story is good and I finished it in a day and a half because I did like the actual writing. I've read a couple others from this author and enjoy his style. It can be quite gory and gritty but I expected that.

The NARRATOR THOUGH! The male narrator was completely fine and frankly the female one was too when she wasn't doing an accent. The character was supposed to be from the upper east coast (Jersey) and the terrible "American" accent was all over the place. It went from New York to suddenly being upper-Midwestern and then it would fall into a California 80s "valley girl" mess. (all done in a high-pitched nasal voice mind you) It made me HATE the character. I don't think that would have happened if I'd read a physical copy. I'm blown away that THIS was the voice they chose to go with.

I wish I could go back and just read this.

Ok story, ok performance. I thought it was interesting at the beginning but the middle is dragged out. I lost interest. The end was better but not great.

Give the audio version a pass and just read this one. I don’t understand how the woman’s “American accent” made it past the producers of this audiobook. It almost feels like a bad joke. It’s unfortunate, because this is an otherwise great read. Audible should use a sample of the woman narrator to give folks a more realistic preview of what they’re spending their money on.
