He was the biggest man baseball has ever produced. Babe Ruth transcended the sport that brought him fame, money, and adulation, moving beyond the limits of baselines and outfield fences into the mainstream of American life.

In this extraordinary biography, Creamer uncovers the complex and captivating man behind the legend. He presents the truth behind famous Ruth stories, such as the "called shot" homers and the home run for a dying child, analyzes the astounding statistics with detailed information on specific games, and describes Ruth's varied, often volatile, relations with those around him, from fellow players to fans, friends, and reporters.

From Babe Ruth's early days in a Baltimore orphanage, to the glory days with the Yankees, to his final years, Creamer has drawn an indelible portrait of a true folk hero.

Critic reviews

"This book does far more than tell the facts and myths of Babe Ruth's life. It chronicles a time when baseball was played only on grass and a western road trip for East Coast teams meant a train ride to St. Louis." (AudioFile)

Creamer’s book should be on every baseball fan’s shortlist of books-to-read. And readers interested in American biography will also find enjoyment and insight while exploring the life of one of America’s greatest cultural icons. Creamer provides a lively telling of the Babe’s colorful life, including his legendary on-the-field accomplishments along with his disreputable off-the-field escapades. Creamer’s biography provides a balanced narrative of his childhood, playing career, personal life, retirement, and death, adding relevant cultural and historical details to place Ruth in his historical context. Baseball fans will especially relish his attention to various facets of the game, as well as Creamer’s retelling of the Babe’s most famous moments.

In the end, Creamer should be highly commended for bringing the Babe to life in this book.

Overall I liked the book. Probably the best biography on Babe Ruth I have read. However, I was surprise that the author skipped over the death of Babe's first wife, his feud with Lou Gehrig, death of Miller Huggins, and induction into the Hall of Fame. I might have skimmed over it but I sure don't remember listening to it on my bike.

Like the book but it skipped over some stuff
