Written to commemorate the Bicentennial in 1976, James A. Michener’s magnificent saga of the Westis an enthralling celebration of the frontier. Brimming with the glory of America’s past, the story of Colorado—the Centennial State—is manifested through its people: Lame Beaver, the Arapaho chieftain and warrior, and his Comanche and Pawnee enemies; Levi Zendt, fleeing with his child bride from the Amish country; the cowboy, Jim Lloyd, who falls in love with a wealthy and cultured Englishwoman, Charlotte Seccombe. In Centennial, trappers, traders, homesteaders, gold seekers, ranchers, and hunters are brought together in the dramatic conflicts that shape the destiny of the legendary West—and the entire country.

Great story dulled completely by the narration. The fact that the story kept me hooked in spite of the terrible narration says a lot for the story.

This book should come with a warning about the narration

This work of historical fiction spans from prehistoric days to the late 70s. It’s well worth the read. One of my favorite Michener novels.

Lots of historical information

read this back when it came out in mid 70s. wanted to re-read it after visiting that area of Colorado. It was so fascinating with well developed characters that made the history come to life. Though the author included tragedies that come with living on the plains, the novel remains hopefully reflecting the spirit of these brave people.

by far, one of the best Michener's

Ackward back story for publisher. The chatacters never disappoint though.
Overall an enjoyable series. It took a long time for me to figure out the title. I couldn’t understand why people from New Orleans were going to California (s
o it is a city in Colorado that changed it’s name).

I give it a “B” or “B+”
