They still can't stand one another, but their outward animosity covers their mutually undeniable attraction, and it isn't long before their passion consumes them. Fran Jules is impressive in capturing the sizzling chemistry between Rory and Connor, including the various flashbacks where Jules uses perfect childish pitch. Checkmate hinges on this love/hate relationship, and Jules' enthusiastic performance makes it a hilarious and sexy romp.

This amazing creation born through the author and narrators collaboration, immersed me in Connor and Rory’s universe. Checkmate is among a rare category of books and audiobooks possessing the ability to teleport me into their stories creating an immersion experience. I become a part of the characters and felt their story as they shared it, eliciting an array of my own emotions. Right away, I hated Connor along with Rory. I was a version of the child Rory was, constantly bullied growing up, wishing I could retaliate or for them to sweep me off my feet admitting they were in love with me. A few times I had to stop the audiobook, walk away to get my own emotions controlled, then immediately teleported back. I started the story hating Connor and emotionally intertwined with Rory wanting her to get him good. I ended book loving the couple they became.

I hated, emotionally struggled and loved listening to this audiobook.

It was an adorable story, really. But if I never hear the words “hot cocoa” again, it’ll be too soon. They center so much of her livelihood on hot cocoa, I swear. I get it, she likes cocoa. But I don’t need 3 descriptive pages of it. Truly lol. Otherwise, very cute story.
