If you can’t beat ’em… burn it all down.
The fae royalty think I’m their toy. Their entertainment.
But I’m the only thing standing between their glittering world and the darkness waiting to consume mine.
To buy us time, Tarian enters me into the court games—a bloodsport for the bored and cruel. No allies. No protection. Just monsters wearing crowns and smiling as they watch me fall.
My odds of survival? Slim.
My resolve? Unbreakable.
They’ve always underestimated me. I exist in the shadows. I thrive there.
And when they push me too far… they’ll learn exactly what kind of carnage a cornered human can unleash.
The explosive conclusion to the Shadowbound Fae duet.

Starting with the fact that this story is a spin off of another series that I absolutely loved, and then add that to the fact that it features fiery FMC Daisy - whom I loved from the previous series - and I was already sold.
This is the second book in this spin off series, but it has quite a bit of page time from the original crew of the Gods of San Franscisco series - Lexi, DemiGod Kieran, Mortecai and the rest of the gang - as they all end up in the Faelands to try to rescue Daisy.
The plot centers around MMC Tarian, a Celestial who is under a curse and forced to stay in a court where the magic is becoming corrupt. His goal has been to find the "chalice" to try to balance the magic and save Fairie. The unfortunate thing is that the chalice ended up being a person, not an object....and that person is Daisy.
Then, things get even more complicated when Daisy decides that she wants to stay and help Tarian to save Faerie because in the end, it will save her world as well. I'm sure the fact that she has experienced instant and exp0losive chemistry with Tarian had nothing to do with her decision, right?
I enjoyed this conclusion to the duet. I listened to it on audio and as always, Khristine Hvam did a fantastic job as the narrator. Was there absolute crazy insta-love? Yep. And bonkers behavior? Yep.
Did I enjoy it anyway? Yep.
Loved it :)

After reading (and listening to)The Demi Gods of San Francisco series by this author I was apprehensive and curious about what direction Daisy's story would take. I have to say I'm much more than pleasantly surprised. If you've read books by K.F. Breene before, you can expect much of that same sense of adventure, witty banter, and a god(ess) tier BADASS FMC.
You need to read the first book in this duology, "Obsidian", before reading this one. I'd also recommend reading the Demi Gods of San Francisco series before this duet to understand some of the banter, and the relationships between characters established in the prior books who make appearances in this story.
Overall Story Evaluation:
I'm going to have to reread Obsidian but I can tentatively say that I like this book even more. Lots of character growth, world expansion and intersection, and all of the emotions. Having read all of the prior books, I felt like I knew many of these characters very well already. The culmination of the story also has such a wonderful and heartwarming quality that can be attributed to the very solid foundation and depth that Queen Breene gave these characters.
Considering the writing specifically, K.F. Breene creates and expands these worlds, characters, creatures, and the rules associated with them in such an effortless way. The descriptions never felt forced and as a reader I was able to create a vivid image in my mind of what the characters were seeing and experiencing.
Romance Evaluation:
Returning to other aspects of the story itself, I'd consider it to be a slow burn romance with mild to moderate steam. 2/5 🌶️ It has about the same amount as the DGoSF series as a point of reference. The length of the story itself is also perfect for the events that take place within the story and for everything to be wrapped up in a very satisfying way without anything feeling rushed or dragged out.
Specific Character Evaluation:
I enjoyed Hades' reappearance, he is one character I really liked from the previous series. I also really enjoyed the Fallen's reaction to Daisy's character as they got to know her better. I thought the MMC Tarion was written very well and was a good balance with Daisy's character. The FMC Daisy character is written exquisitely. I admit I underestimated her in the DGoSF series, but in that series she is still technically (and literally) a teenager. Her level of maturity and character growth in The Shadowbound Fae series accurately reflects what effect the years that passed in between the two stories would have theoretically had on her character. I liked her character in the previous series but I have grown to love and better appreciate this character in this duet. She is a force to be reckoned with. There are seldom such beautiful, self aware, self assured, self reliant, and strong female characters written in romance, romantasy, and the like. She is now hands down one of my favourite FMCs written.
Though, considering K.F. Breene's other series, the author tends to do an exceptional job creating and writing strong female characters that are relatable regardless of the unrealistic circumstances those characters are in.
If you enjoy fantasy, paranormal romance, and the like you'll probably enjoy this.
Daisy is a BADASS ✨✨💎💎
