A steamy one-night-stand in the bathroom of a bar in Las Vegas after a world championship win? Yes, please.

Meeting him again months later, only to learn he's my newest competition? Not so much.

The weight of the legacy I carry is a constant tug in my mind, with the ghosts of the generations before me always whispering for me to push harder, train longer, be better.

In the eight seconds I have to ride, everything else falls away, and my sole focus is on doing what I do best.

I am Shooter Graham, consecutive three-time world champion bronc rider. No one has ever come close to taking the title since I've had it… until him.

Sterling Addams. The new cowboy in town with dark hair, eyes like honey, and a taste for me he likes to pretend he doesn't have.

He's green… but he's good. Too good.

Suddenly, the already heavy pressure I'm under multiplies tenfold. The need to beat him, the uncontrollable urge to put him in his place, becomes almost an obsession.

The question is, how far will I go to prove I'm number one?

I am surprised how much I enjoyed this by the end and I'm glad I finished. The character's were very lovable and it's a low angst listen. This story got better and better with a romantic and lovely finish.

🥵 Alex Kydd performance as Shooter was 🔥 The narration definitely kept me engaged during the slower start to this book and was well worth it in the second half of this book. I would listen to pretty much any MM romance he narrated now.

*In the first half of the book there are some editing issues in the writing (ie. repetiveness) and little moments of dead air in this recording but turning the speed to 1.05 eliminated this completely.

cowboy romance ❤️

I love Shooter, that guy's ego is something and I'm here for it!

loved the sweet and funny parts, the touch of hurt/comfort, and the spice was top tier

I was already a fan of Aaron but it was my first time listening to Alex... 👀 sir! 🫠 I'm gonna need more books narrated by him 🔥

8 Seconds to Ride is one of my favorite cowboy MM books. It doesn’t sugarcoat the rodeo lifestyle, and it follows the characters on the rodeo circuit, which gives it a fresh setting and helps shed light on how life on the road affects relationships and both physical and mental health.

The rivalry between Shooter and Sterling is perfectly written. It gracefully toes the line of believable turmoil between the two MCs without fully crossing over to anything unhealthy. Ashley James is excellent at writing lovable, flawed characters. This is probably the only instance where a guy can say “it ain’t gonna suck itself” and you don’t want to punch him in the face. At least not that hard.

The fact that Shooter’s mental health is addressed adds bonus points to the story. Not just a professional athlete, but one carrying a family legacy, the pressure he is under could have easily been glossed over to make a lighter story. Instead, James recognizes how that pressure can overtake someone’s inner voice and affect not only their performance but their relationships. She also gives Shooter the courage he needs to step back and prioritize his mental health, proving that sometimes it takes more strength to ask for help than to ignore an issue.

This book fully encapsulates the grit of the cowboy lifestyle while still allowing for that heartwarming romance.

I love how the author wrote the narrative for this story. The MC’s were well developed, and the unfolding of their relationship felt very realistic as did their dialogue.

As a man, I find it challenging to find well written and realistic romance stories in the M/M romance genre, but this one hit the mark. The two narrators were well matched to the MC they were paired with, and each one brought depth to the story. When I first heard Shooter’s voice, I thought it was overly contrived. But, I found that his voice was well suited to the character he portrayed. I hope the other books in this series are as well written and narrated as this one.

Beautifully written romance
