The story is increasingly about food production, only they only make wheat which has very little nutrition and almost no essential proteins or fats (there are no essential carbs). Even better is that they've moved from fermented sourdough, which actually provides some nutrition to humans, to processed white flour noodles. I'm wondering if the next book is going to include the major malnutrition epidemics that struck most countries when they moved from sourdough and pushed most countries to mandate that vitamins and minerals be added into the flour (enriched flour). Once they do that they can raise corn and then instead of nixtamalization they can just use it as straight corn and then can have a pellagra outbreak to solve.

Outside of the food production the story is pretty good. Aside from lack of nutrition knowledge (not an issue if it weren't such a major point of the story), there have been a few instances where lack of economic understanding is injected by the author (like how they implement price controls and somehow don't realize that they make shortages far worse due to removing the feedback between supply and demand).

The points of him having a moral conviction are very odd, He'll have no issue with killing or fighting for a while, then when someone asks him to help stop a maniacal tyrant who is slaughtering his own people, he freaks out.

Too much focus on food that's not food
