Australian horse breeder Daniel Roke had resisted the exorbitant sum of money offered by a suave Englishman to investigate a scandal involving drugged racehorses.

But after another investigator dies mysteriously, Roke agrees to fill his shoes, and learns that men who would give drugs to horses are capable of doing much worse to human beings …

This is my favorite Dick Francis novels. It is one of his earliest so of course it is dated, but a great story with a riveting hero and this is a really fun read.

Great story

I’ve been reading Dick Francis books for many years and now enjoy them again on audio. This was one of the really good ones. I hate animal cruelty in stories, which you will find associated with the bad guys, but I get the idea and just fast forward. This reader was very good. I am happy to recommend this novel.

Another good one!!

So interesting to see the daily life of a 1960’s English stable lad through this protagonist’s eyes! That was the best part. The plot seemed overall a bit thin and the criminals were almost Dickensian caricatures. Beautifully read, made everyone come alive!

Interesting viewpoint
