Despair, suicide, and obsessive hatred, mixed well with humor, love, and horses, brew up into the story of a battle between one man's nerve and another man's cunning. Robert Finn, steeplechase jockey, finds himself the focus of a malicious campaign, which is also afflicting his friends. He sets out to discover its source and remove it.

Dick Francis's main characters are always determined and strong willed, but Rob Finn has a special hardheaded bravery that I adore. He isn't afraid of anything, and when he makes up his mind, nothing will change it. The descriptions of his races in this book are so vivid, you feel like you can hear the hoofbeats. 10/10 story, Tony Britton is just a little too fanciful at times

dick francis doesn't disappoint

I have always enjoyed dick Francis ‘s stories. In my view, this is one of the best five if not the very best of his work. One reason I like it so much is that it has a lot of real horse racing in it !

One of the best dick Frances stories

I enjoyed the characters and the settings. Possible spoiler: I was surprised that there wasn’t a more obvious solution to the romance issue, i.e. that of the hero turning out to be unrelated to the heroine by virtue of his mother’s extramarital activity. Too bad! The first cousins thing is a little off-putting TBH, tho possibly that’s a cultural prejudice.

Fascinating and fast paced!

This story was obviously well researched with all the psychological twists. The villain in this book is an absolutely horrendous person. I love the way Dick Francis draws his characters and his books are always well finished well. Fought out. Makes me wanna read more and more of his books. I’ve actually read pretty much all of them.

Psychological thriller!

As always the story is exciting engaging and well performed with predictable events but I was uncomfortable with the sun theme of potential incest and the vengeance of the hero Usually the criminals are the sadidtic ones

Worth it but uncomfortable themes
