Callan MacGregor’s tortured past is awakened when the woman he secretly loves is brutally attacked. His heart will not rest until vengeance is served. Best-selling author, Lydia Michaels, delivers a devastatingly dark psychological thriller that haunts and hypnotizes.

Violence made me vicious and my sins are too many to count. When I look at her, I’m reminded of everything that is good and pure in this world. My redemption is hopeless, so I keep my distance, fighting the temptation to get closer to her, even when her eyes invite me in. Everyone I love eventually disappears, so I must keep my distance to keep her safe. It is the price I pay for the ruthless horrors I’ve committed. Until I see her hurt. Now nothing, not even my past, could keep me away.

I often struggled through ours heros past. It was painful and quite frankly distributing. It was also beautiful. I couldn't put it down for long.

Triggering but beautiful

This is a great listen! It's well written as all Lydia Michaels books are with great narration. Definitely has triggers for some sensitive to sexual abuse but still a great story

I really enjoyed this audible. The story was GREAT! The narrators were perfect. It's dark, has some triggers of sexual abuse, but what a love story. Waiting for the next book, patiently.

This isn’t what I’d typically classify as dark romance but it is dark, and it is a romance. And honestly? That distinction matters.

Hurt is best described as a dark psychological romance, and that label fits perfectly. The story explores heavy, triggering themes (including SA) that fundamentally shape both main characters. Callan and Emery are deeply traumatized, emotionally scarred, and very much “damaged,” which makes this a true slow burn built on healing, trust, and understanding. The connection takes time to bloom and that patience is part of what makes it work.

Was there secret obsession? Yes.
Was there pining? Also yes.
Was this as spicy as some other dark romances? No, but that didn’t take away from the story for me. It simply shifted the focus.

What really stood out was the depth of the character development. Watching Callan and Emery grow, both individually and together, felt raw, real, and earned. They don’t just fall in love; they find strength in one another. They truly complete each other in a way that feels organic, not romanticized or rushed.

The trauma, the realism, and the emotional weight of this story pulled me in. This one sits with you.

I listened to the audiobook, and I’m genuinely glad I did. The narrators were great, and the Scottish accent was top tier. Reading the Scottish phrasing on the page might’ve been difficult for me. Hearing it brought the story to life in a deeply immersive way, sometimes almost too immersive during the tougher scenes.

Dark and emotional, Hurt isn’t easy, but it’s powerful, beautifully told, and absolutely worth the experience. 🖤🎧📚
