The fantastic prequel to The Good Daughter, the stunning new stand-alone from the number-one best-selling author of the Will Trent and Grant County series.

Protecting someone always comes at a cost.

At the age of 13, Charlie Quinn's childhood came to an abrupt and devastating end. Two men, with a grudge against her lawyer father, broke into Charlie's home - and after that shocking night, her world was never the same.

Now a lawyer herself, Charlie has made it her mission to defend those with no one else to turn to. So when Flora Faulkner, a motherless teen, begs for help, Charlie is reminded of her own past and is powerless to say no.

But honor student Flora is in far deeper trouble than Charlie could ever have anticipated. Soon she must ask herself: How far should she go to protect her client? And can she truly believe everything she is being told?

I love this author and narrator. But the ending left me wanting. Maybe there’s a sequel.

Lousy ending

This is a fascinating story, and it has all manner of unexpected twists and turns, and most importantly, and especially major one at the end that is a really great pay off for reading the book. Charlie, the protagonist, couldn't be more engaging, and just overall, the characterizations are fabulous. The only reason I didn't give this book a five star review all around is that, while The story is first rate, the writing could be better. Kathleen early, the narrator, although she reads dialogue plenty well, is slightly less amazing when it comes to the narrative. But even with these couple of downsides, I would still recommend the book highly to anyone looking for a really fascinating, slightly chilling and suspenseful read to pass a Saturday afternoon, and I will be excited to read the sequel for sure!

Enjoyable story about a female lawyer and long time Girl Scout advocate who is approached by a teen age girl scout saying she needs help. The lawyer bonds with the girl slowly dragging out the details of her problem. Initially the girl says she just wants to be emancipated but there is much more to this girl than meets the eye as the lawyer soon finds out.

I don’t usually listen to short books (4 hours) but took a chance on this one. I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the book and narrator. The only criticism is that the book ends abruptly and leaves a lot of loose ends. But it was a good listen.

Good story but ending was cut short
