A nostalgic tale of first love, first loss, and the budding womanhood of a Black girl in the '90s.

Tragedy flips Amore Brown’s world on its axis right before she heads off to college. Having to sit tight for the summer, she chooses Jersey City, New Jersey - the home of her estranged father - to pass the time. Here, in urban grit, a stark contrast to the comforts of suburbia, she reconnects with a long-lost cousin for some final months of summer excursions, enrooting, and evolving. But it could never be that simple, even if it were all so simple then....

How much will Amore have to lose in order to find herself? On the road to the woman she is becoming and removed from the girl she is no more, one stop changes her path forever.

"Girls just want to have fun" transforms into the kindling of summer romance tucked into the crust of good times, tribulations, close calls, and one hot summer in Jersey. Amore meets THE guy, finds solace, heals fresh wounds, and battles the thorny relationship with her father, all while learning that heartache has no limits.

This book was amazing! First time reading from this author and it did not disappoint. I laughed, cried and was angry. All emotions were felt. The narration was great as usual from Ms Small.

Amazing!

I wasn’t for sure if I was going to like this one seeing as it was more about the main characters when they were 18, but it turned out to get a very good book. Took a few turns in the story but has been worth the listening.

Very good read.

This was such a great coming of age story...after losing her mother unexpectedly, Amore goes to live with her estranged father. I enjoyed the developing relationship between Amore and her father. Amore rekindles the relationship with her cousin Tammy, who she didn't see that often...but, when the two got together...it was like they never left one another....An unexpected meeting at a local bodega is where Amore will meet Gabe (Guap)...who will turn out to be the love of her life....The development of this relationship was great to me...this young couple was able to really teach one another things...that was beautiful to me...There is an incident that occurs that was too graphic for me (I usually don't listen to these type of books)...and because this was an audiobook....I politely used the skip button a few times to get passed the incident...because I already knew the outcome....Shayna Small did an awesome job with the narration of this eclectic cast of characters.
