How did an actress die twice?

London, 1883. Actress Lizzie Dixie drowned in the River Thames, so how was she murdered five years later in Highgate Cemetery?

Intrepid Fleet Street reporter Penny Green was a friend of Lizzie's, and Scotland Yard needs her help. Does Penny unwittingly hold clues to Lizzie's mysterious death? Penny must work with Inspector James Blakely to investigate the worlds of theater, showmen, and politicians in search of the truth. But who is following her? And who is sending her threatening letters?

Penny is about to discover that Lizzie's life was more complicated, and dangerous, than she could ever have imagined.

If you enjoy the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt novels of Anne Perry, you'll be very comfortable with this novel. While Penny and the inspector are not married, in fact, just meet in this novel, they work together well, bounce ideas off each other, and make their way thru a number of red herrings to get to the truth of the murder. The ending was satisfying, and the characters throughout the book were well developed and interesting personalities. As in Anne Perry's books, the historical manner of living provides a backdrop for the story.

A good one for fans of Anne Perry

I definitely enjoyed this novel, it was fun and I liked Penny & James, Penny’s sister & landlady and few of the other characters. A few were annoying at times but overall, I enjoyed the writing. It was different and shows promise for a series. I also liked the narrator, Gabrielle Baker.

Enjoyed

The ending had a twist that I didn't guess and that always makes me happy. I liked the book and will probably read more in the series but I didn't love it. But it has potential.

Nice read

I think this was a delightful read. I loved the narrator and this is one of the few books I think are better listened to than read. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because it is a little slower; but I found the characters and time period so endearing that I didn't want to skip ahead or return it. At the end, you understand why some of the "slower" stuff was in the middle. I wasn't surprised by who the murderer was, but then there were a couple quick twists that did catch me off guard at the end, and I liked that. I have already bought the second and look forward to listening to it.

I don't like reading stories with teenagers as the leads because there tends to be petty drama. I liked that this book had adult main characters, but didn't have any swearing or sex scenes, and wasn't Hallmark cheesy. There is discussion of consorts, but it isn't uncomfortable or detailed. They acknowledge that life style exists and it plays into the murder, but that's it. I would feel good with anyone 12+ listening to this. Buy it!
