Born into eight very different families, the upbringing and fortunes of Queen Victoria's grandsons varied widely. Some died in childhood, some were killed in action, and others lived to see grandchildren of their own. There were heroes and villains, valiant soldiers and dissipated youths, but their lives were interconnected through the tiny Queen for whom their welfare and happiness was a constant preoccupation. As part of a wide, extended family, they lived through the halcyon days of the late nineteenth century European monarchies, witnessing the most spectacular and the most tragic events of the age.

I think the book is interesting, but the narration is unbearable. I don’t understand narrators who feel compelled to “act” out the parts. Wilhelm II sounds like Margaret Thatcher with extra marbles in her mouth. And Queen Victoria sounds like Margaret Thatcher with extra-extra marbles in her mouth. Totally distracting and unnecessary.

What’s with the Narration?!

I enjoyed everything with the exception of the narrator’s attempt to effect an accent when direct quoting - it was very, very grating. Learning about other grandsons of Queen Victoria (sans the obvious-George V & the Kaiser) was interesting & quite fun.

Very good & informative overall
