""An absolute must-read"" – Shondaland

“[Rabbit] tells how it went down with brutal honesty and outrageous humor” – New York Times

They called her Rabbit.

Patricia Williams (aka Ms. Pat) was born and raised in Atlanta at the height of the crack epidemic. One of five children, Pat watched as her mother struggled to get by on charity, cons, and petty crimes. At age seven, Pat was taught to roll drunks for money. At twelve, she was targeted for sex by a man eight years her senior. By thirteen, she was pregnant. By fifteen, Pat was a mother of two.

Alone at sixteen, Pat was determined to make a better life for her children. But with no job skills and an eighth-grade education, her options were limited. She learned quickly that hustling and humor were the only tools she had to survive. Rabbit is an unflinching memoir of cinematic scope and unexpected humor. With wisdom and humor, Pat gives us a rare glimpse of what it’s really like to be a black mom in America.

All genres considered, the memoir is among the most difficult and complex for a writer to pull off. After all, giving voice to your own lived experience and recounting deeply painful or uncomfortable memories in a way that still engages and entertains is a remarkable feat. These autobiographies, often narrated by the authors themselves, shine with raw, unfiltered emotion sure to resonate with any listener. But don't just take our word for it—queue up any one of these listens, and you'll hear exactly what we mean.

Think Tiffany Haddish with a dash of Elaine Stritch
"Maybe you had a great childhood with totally functional parents who loved you very much and made sure you knew it. I’m happy for you, I swear! Fortunately for the rest of us, we have Ms. Pat, who is the patron saint of coping through laughter. Ms. Pat was just a kid when she was repeatedly sexually assaulted, and she was pregnant by the time she was 13. By 15, she was a mother of two. Through it all, she developed a keen hustler’s spirit and stayed afloat until she discovered she had a knack for comedy. No one else can make me laugh (or cry) like Ms. Pat."

I literally cried during the entire last chapter. So sad that it's over. Me Pat's narration was honest and fresh. Her side splitting humor is only tempered by the weight of her story. This is a must read, it will take your emotions for the best ride ever.

a beautiful honest story.

This is hands down the best book I've ever read or this case heard. From the moment it starts you are drawn in. Ms. Pat has lived an amazing life and overcame the odds while remaining grateful and with a big loving heart. This woman is truly amazing this needs to be a movie!

The best book I've ever read!

I saw the recommendation for this book in essence magazine. I was skeptical at first, normally reading autobiographies of people I knew, but I gave it a try. Oh how I was mistaken. This book was excellent! The story was so well told. I had moments of laughter, sadness, and tears. An emotional roller coaster for sure, but it was great. I recommend the book for anyone. It gives such motivation. Great job, Ms. Pat, great job!

A story of triumph

This is a must read. As much as Rabbit thought her life was “normal”, I thought I knew what a hard life was. I was wrong. I didn’t know anything about the trials of living in these situations and I had many options about why people ended up in them.
Ms Pat, you taught me a lot.
I’ve recommend this to my kids who grew up in the “white burbs”. Many white people have no idea...

Most amazing real life experience I have read.
