Sara Grey's world shattered 10 years ago when her father was brutally murdered. Now, at 17, she is still haunted by memories of that day and driven by the need to understand why it happened. She lives a life full of secrets, and her family and friends have no idea of the supernatural world she is immersed in or of Sara's own very powerful gift.

In her quest for answers about her father's death, Sara takes risks that expose her and her friends to danger and puts herself into the sights of a sadistic vampire. On the same fateful night she meets Nikolas, a warrior who turns Sara's world upside down and is determined to protect her even if it's the last thing she wants.

Sara's life starts to spin out of control as she is hunted by an obsessed vampire, learns that her friends have secrets of their own, and reels from the truth about her own ancestry. Sara has always been fiercely independent, but in order to survive now she must open herself to others, to reveal her deepest secrets. And she must learn to trust the one person capable of breaking down the walls around her.

After a year of being badgered by my book friends I finally dove into this book. Due to time constraints and other things I decided to go with the audio version. It did not disappoint.
Like most books in this genre, I am met with a young girl who has some type of powers and realizes she is possess a gift far greater than she initially imagined. Then enters the hot and sexy swoon worthy male.
Unlike many of the males I've read, there is a subtle "alphaness" to Nikolas. I love that he isn't overly demanding and possessive which I admit at times bug me. He was able to let Sara make her own decisions but still remained in the background to be on guard for assistance. And this is what made me love the book. Sara was a girl on a mission to find who killed her father. She also had heart and compassion for her friends her uncle and all the "other" important "people" in her life.
I really enjoyed the story and although I am not a fan of stories that include vamps, I believe this series deals with more than the blood suckers. I mean I am all about paranormals. 😊

Now time for Refuge!

Finally finished. Totally worth it!

I've already read this series in print. It's so good, I missed it, so I decided to listen this time. This story is just what I like to see in YA--a strong female protagonist, decent writing, minimum angst. There is a hint of romance, but it's neither overwrought nor sappy.

The narrator is mostly good. Her voice suits this character well. My only issue is that she does *terrible* accents, which is too bad, because there are several characters in this book who have accents. Her portrayal of Nikolas borders on ridiculous at times. The good news is, as bad as her accents are, they're also inconsistent, so Nikolas's dialogue is not cringe-worthy 100% of the time.

My big bone to pick with this book is this: there are very few characters who are people of color in this book, but every POC is a bad guy. Every. Single. One. That is problematic, to say the least, and it did not sit well with me as a reader. They're also pretty stereotypical--we've got an evil sheik, a vaguely Middle Eastern man who hates women, and an African witch doctor.

I wish there had been more room in this story for POC who are good, or maybe even just normal, and I also wish that Caitlin Greer would have just not tried to do the accents at all, rather than do them terribly. That being said, I am a fan of this series, and can't wait to "re-read" the next book.

Already Knew I Loved This Series

i have always loved the Relentless series and hearing it on audible gave me another reason why to love it. The narrator did a good job in delivering the lines as if she was the characters herself! looking forward to the rest of the series!

i love it!!
