This acclaimed, award-winning novel by Mitali Perkins will soon be a movie!

Naima is a talented painter of traditional alpana patterns, which Bangladeshi women and girls paint on their houses for special celebrations. But Naima is not satisfied just painting alpana. She wants to help earn money for her family, like her best friend, Saleem, does for his family. When Naima's rash effort to help puts her family deeper in debt, she draws on her resourceful nature and her talents to bravely save the day.

Really appreciated that the narrator was Desi so that pronunciation was accurate. I also loved the glossary at the beginning as well as the info on microfinance at the end. The story did not go how we expected--but we still loved it.

Wonderful story about a girl that lives in India and tries helping her dad earn money. If you are learning about India it will teach you a whole lot. The best part is that it is saying a girl can be as good as a boy.

We had to read this book for a professional development and at 1st I was not excited about the idea but once it started and I heard the struggle of the character Naima I began to appreciate learning about her culture. This is a good read for middle school students who are working on understanding other cultures.
