In his TED Talk classic from September 2009, titled How Great Leaders Inspire Action, Simon Sinek models what might be the textbook speech. In Speech Blueprint, Paul Gustavson breaks down the 10 essential elements for presenting an idea that inspires action based on Simon’s model. He shows how it is a powerful mechanism that anyone can use.

Through these elements you'll learn:

  • The importance of creating dips and spikes
  • The value of questions
  • The power of stories
  • The impact of inserting scientific research
  • The magic of pauses
  • The mechanisms to pivot through a crisis
  • The importance to iterate a key thought to drive home the message
  • The power of visual communication
  • The simple way to finish your presentation

I enjoyed the science the author uses to "explain" what it was about Senik's talk that catapulted it to one of the most watched talks in the world.

The "art, craft, and practice" part of the book was a bit lean, other than the regular references to authenticity.

All in all well worth a read.

Stimulating and thought provoking

This little book helped me to see the value of learning how to be more thoughtful of my audience's personalities in my presentations. The how-to suggestions are very helpful and I wouldn't have gleaned them from just watching Simon Sinek's Ted Talk. The author has truly designed a blueprint and I plan to follow it. The book inspires me to want to learn more about how to relate better to my audience. I'll listen to it again, and possible again and again...

Very helpful and I want to learn more...
