Wow! Maria Luis has outdone herself with this book. Avery is strong yet vulnerable, timid yet bold, naive yet sensual. She is the best kind of wonderful in a complicated walking contradiction. Lincoln personifies hurt, anger, and love with nowhere to go. To say these characters are textured and complex is an understatement. Their chemistry will make your heart speed up and beg for more!! The city itself will draw you in and wrap its spell around you. This story, oh my, this story!! I won’t spoil it, so just read it - you will not regret it! The writing is flawless, as always. Maira Luis took a chance to write a book outside her norm, and the risk was so worth it! It is an amazing book with richness, character, charm, a little darkness, a lot of sizzle, and a whole lot of passion. This book is a diamond in a cubic zirconia world. It did end on an amazing, yet omg, cliffy. Luckily, the next book is out at the end of the month! I cannot recommend this book enough!!

The audio version—holy moly! It’s fantastic. The narrators enhance an already amazing story. I can't recommend it enough!

In this story, Maria Luis brings us Sargeant Lincoln Asher and Avery Washington who lives as a fortune teller while hiding out in New Orleans. Both have been damaged by their pasts. She as a 12 year old child listening as her mother was murdered, then knowing the bad guy was after her. He is a dominant cop with lots of secrets. This story has dark twists, explosive chemistry, and the ability to keep you turning pages way into the night. It does cliffhanger into Defied Blood Duet #2. This is a 5 star read. Congrats on weaving a great story Maria!
I really love the dual narrators, Stella Hunter & JF Harding and they did a terrific job.

Her style of writing stories is so very unique.

Lincoln Asher is a cop. He keeps to himself and has a very dark upbringing.

He has secrets of his own, but when he meets Avery, something flips inside of him, and now he can't escape the way she pulls him back to her.
She just may be the death of him.

Stella Hunter and JF Harding bring this book to life.
There voices are pure magic.
I could listen to them all day.

This is the first of two books and must be read in order.

A gripping tale of two people who have been thrown to the wolves and still some how survived.

I like how easily this story could be true. The smut was really good and the story was super interesting. Ready to read the next story.

The audio was well done, love both JF and Stella. They did a really good job. It was the story and characters I didn’t connect with. I will not be reading the second one. What threw me off a little bit was that someone compared this to The Maddest Obsession and I would say that it is a poor comparison.
