This was a great series. Sad it’s over. The narration was great. The world building was great. Glad I found it.

Probably the best ending this story could’ve had.

I don't know how to say this without sounding slightly edgy, but I'm going to argue the opposite of what I assume many people have an issue with. I love the setting. Mesoamerica is such a unique and brutal culture, and I love how Durand committed to it.

This should be textbook on how authors world build. Not the necessarily the content, but how a culture and realistic setting is created. I think it shows immaturity in a writer when modern day ideas bleed into their worlds. This world is both alien and familiar, and I can't give enough props for choosing to use such an under utilized culture as the influence. How many books just slap a new coat of paint on the same reused tropes (corrupt church that definitely isn't Catholic or evil cultivator sect hiding under the veil of the righteous faction)?

And the brutality fits the story so well. A Messiah isn't required to save a just world.

Which brings me to the MC. He fits the world like a glove. He has flaws and failings. He struggles with morality, but without feeling like he fell 700 years out of the future. If you're looking for a milquetoast, self-insert protagonist that never faces adversity, you're going to have to try a different series.

I really love this. it is incredibly hard to find well-written seriously dark content; With the daunting edge of inescapable realism yet set in a fantasy world. I have been very happy with this series throughout. I came here after reading the author's perfect run, but I was very surprised by how different these are. I have enjoyed both thoroughly

I'm still in awe at the authors range, this is wildly different from many of their other stories, and overall I enjoyed it enough to get through all 5 books. That being said, I understand why there aren't many reviews on the later books. Some of the concepts are uncomfortable. I really don't understand why the incest thing had to keep popping up. The "prank" with his consort had purpose even if it was uncomfortable, but there are some moments in this one with both her and their mom, which just felt entirely unnecessary, especially since there were multiple different instances. It also seems a bit rushed. It's unusual for the final book in a series to be the shortest, but we started with 2 nightlords, their dad, and 2 embers left in this book to be resolved along with side things. And the changes Ishtak goes through personality wise seem extremely abrupt, even if I can understand the reason.

Overall if you've gotten this far it's a good conclusion to the series, but it's certainly not my favorite of Maxine J Durand series
