Her career on the line and an innocent woman charged with murder. Can she save them both?

As bogus corruption charges loom over her, DS Kat Ballantyne finds herself deskbound and stuck with cold cases. Her hated boss, DI Carver, has given her just one week to explain how £50,000 found its way into her bank account. If she can’t, she’ll be lucky to have a desk at all.

Then a close friend calls her from a murder scene, claiming to have strangled a local gangster’s wife. Kat has no choice but to disobey orders and investigate. Despite overwhelming forensic evidence supporting her friend’s confession, something still doesn’t add up…

With the clock against her, can Kat unmask her unwelcome benefactor, save her career and find the real killer before an innocent woman pays the ultimate price?

I have been loving all the characters. However, I’m not sure I can continue with hey series of stories that blatantly hate women and an evil police boss can literally do anything he wants. Books should be a getaway from what’s the normal real life instead of mimicking how the world really is.

I find that this series goes down smooth. It’s got all the right elements that should be in a good detective story without things I don’t like such as crazy relationships and immature behavior. This time around though the author revealed information to the character but not to the audience 3x. Methinks the author is getting tired. Also this time it seemed like the villain really should have been toppled and it didn’t ring true that he wasn’t.

Good story but some cheap tricks

Come on Andy. I’m willing to suspend my disbelief for character behavior that stretches the bounds of likely or normal. That’s kind of a given with police fiction. But I think you strayed a bit too far in this book. If Kat is such a bang up DI there is no way she’d have behaved as she did at key points in the plot. She’d also be more adept at navigating the politics and the personalities. I’ve read the entire series. This one had great bones but struck me as a bit phoned in at critical points.

Will Kat jump a shark on skis in the next book

Liked it- would definitely recommend it- good story with good twists. Will look for other books by this author

As a police procedural this is the furthest from the truth of how corruption is allowed. This character has grown weaker and weaker as has the storylines. Fortunately this was free to listen to, but no more! The pet names like Tomski are so laughable. The way the main character acts is so unbelievable and that she’s the victim of every conspiracy is laughable. Like I said I’m done! Terrible writing!
