The big chill...

What really happened that tragic Valentine's night on Lake Erie? No one knows. Three old buddies - reckless Matty, successful Clark, clever Val - decided to cap Val's birthday celebration with a stroll across the frozen lake. They never returned. Matty's scarf was found snagged on broken ice.

After the thaw, only the bodies of Clark and Matty are recovered - the latter with a bullet in it. Val remains missing, now a murder suspect. His desperate wife pleads with ex-nun investigator Christine Bennett to find him and prove his innocence.

A tall order, especially when Chris starts hunting for clues in the lives of these respectable suburbanites and their wives. And when she closes in on a truth that chills her to the bone, she suddenly finds herself skating on very thin ice.

Wow! The eighth in the Christine Bennett Mysteries may be the best so far . . . I don’t know, this one knocked my socks off. Three best friends, celebrating the birthday of one of them on Valentine’s Day . . . gone missing to be seen no more. The wife of one of the men contacts Christine to look for the men, and she declines. After the lake thaws, and two of the men’s bodies are recovered, the wife again contacts her, to look for Val, the only one not recovered . . . now suspected of killing his two best friends. His wife, Carlotta, believes him innocent, and still alive . . . somewhere. With no clues, Christine begins her investigation . . . running into brick walls everywhere. Even the other two wives give conflicting stories. Besides the mystery, I love the interaction between Christine and her husband, Jack, their personal lives, and the memories Christine has of her years as a nun, and the friendships that she still has from the convent. Excellent story and conclusion!

Wonderful! I read this book 20 years ago. But it feels like a new book after hearing it. Can’t wait to listen to the next book.
