Before World War II could reach its conclusion, the world suffered what could only be defined as a cataclysm.
Legend has it that an experiment failed. Catastrophically so. And when it failed, the center of the United States, from the Sierra Nevada to the Mississippi river, became "The Waste", where everything changed.
In The Waste, every fantasy creature, fairytale demon, or mythological monster exists. From orcs, to neriads, ogres, trolls, wraiths, elves, harpies, and even beastmen. They all exist, and all despise humankind.
In the ruins of the west and east coasts, new governments have arisen. With new jobs.
Vince is a Ranger, a profession whose sole job duty is surviving in the waste, and taking missions from the Ranger Guild. Be it courier services, escorts, or simply exploring tombs and cities.
Taking up an escort mission, Vince encounters a situation that will shape his life forever onward.
As well as the lives of everyone in North America.
Warning: This novel contains adult themes and moral ambiguities. The main character is written as a real person in an apocalypse, and will not make choices that line up with society and cultural norms.

The characters are all unique and interesting. The main character has an unique set of abilities, likeable yet gruff personality, and a colourful past that leaves you wanted to learn more about him. He also rests just on this side of overpowered, though he gets more and more powerful as the story progresses. I found myself not hating this though, since each bit of power seems to be clearly explained and only adds up to a great deal of power when combined with everything else. The rest of the cast is just as interesting, coming from all walks of life and being proficient in rarely overlapping areas. They also have one of the most unique characters I can remember reading about in recent memory in the form of the "soldier" character and I'd rather not give any more details than that.
The story manages to stay interesting the whole time and also grows in scope as time passes. People have understandable reasons for doing what they do as they travel through a world who's details make me wish I knew more U.S. geography! While this three book series may have rushed to get as large as it has in this first installment, the course still felt natural. The big climax in the third act was built up rather quickly and felt like something that should have happened in a sequel, or final part of a trilogy, but was very enjoyable for those who are a bit more military minded.
One of the best things this book does is how it handles the passage of time. Multiple references to days, weeks, or even months passing, are sprinkled throughout the book making everything from the building of relationships, to the cross country travel that much more realistic and understandable. Even when the cast gets access to faster modes of transport like horses, the author still just allows time to pass faster, instead of being skipped entirely like some authors would do.
Anyone checking out this series for the... "adult bits" will be quite happy with the result. It has some of the best described action I've ever read. Scenes are described in vivid detail and each one manages to be different from the last. Partners, positions, and powers, this book has it all.
In the end, this is one of the best written books in the genre and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of adult content, fantasy settings, and world building.
