Una excelente puerta de entrada a uno de los grandes maestros de la literatura rusa. El relato más largo de este libro, "La sala número seis", narra el lento y fatal proceso por el cual el viejo director de un hospital de pueblo —donde están aislados unos dementes—, acaba por ser encerrado en esa sala de la locura. El resto de los cuentos recogidos van desde lo grotesco, como en "Un drama", en el que un autor teatral mata a una señora con un pisapapeles, hasta la candidez de la adolescencia, presente en ese relato en el que la protagonista escribe una carta a un supuesto enamorado.
