A desperate woman fights to escape captivity in this gripping thriller from the New York Times-bestselling author of All the Ugly and Wonderful Things.

Beatrice is about to lose everything when a kind stranger offers her a cup of coffee and a job. It seems like a promise of a better life...until she wakes up under lock and key in an isolated mansion in the woods.

On orders from a shadowy criminal organization, armed jailers make the rules for their captives, enforcing them with unflinching violence. Beatrice has always been a "nice girl," but that won't save her now. Nobody helped her when she lost her job, her car, and her home, and nobody's coming to give back her freedom. The only person she can rely on is herself. And now, several child hostages are relying on her too.

When the situation gets more dire—deadly even—Beatrice has to become the hero she and her fellow prisoners need. To escape she'll have to outsmart her captors and do terrible things that would horrify her former self. If she succeeds, there's no telling who she'll be when the ordeal comes to an end.

This book should come with 27 trigger warnings, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t believe in trigger warnings. This is one of the heaviest books I’ve read in a very long time, it is not great literature, and it’s certainly not what I would call a thriller, nor even a mystery, it’s dark, brooding, with very heavy subject matter. But written in a way that feels real and believable, which makes it even harder to digest. I will admit there is one part of the ending that I absolutely despise and it just almost ruined it for me. But given the entire books theme, it made sense that that would be a truth for these people. Go into this book warned, knowing that it will be worth all the emotions you feel.

Heavy but worth it!

I read a lot of trigger warning books. They're my go to. I prefer a murder mystery or a thriller or a something dark. This book was recommended to me based off those preferences. This book checks the boxes for trigger warnings and for a thriller. It is however a very slow burn. I was intrigued to know what was going to happen and how it would conclude. I found it left a very dismal, sadness in me when I finished it. It did not have the grittiness my other thrillers have. Or the quick page turning, stomach turning feeling of anticipation. It was a sadness throughout. Once locked inside the house with the main character and the children, you never escape the sadness of the pain she experiences. Even in the end, the pain is there, just less raw. Definitely a well written book and story. I felt like there was room for a follow up book easily. I would recommend it but not for the reasons it was recommended to me.

Slow burn, but good

A beautiful book that I loved even before it paid such lovely homage to my favorite-ever book, The Hotel New Hampshire by John Irving.

This book surprised me. I did not want to put it down. Great from the beginning until the end. I’m shocked this isn’t talked about more.
