A Road to Self-Knowledge by Rudolf Steiner is a spiritual-guide structured as eight meditations, each focusing on successive layers of human being — from the physical body and etheric (life-force) body, through the elemental world and the “Guardian of the Threshold,” to the astral body, the I- or thought-body, the nature of experience in supersensible realms, and finally the remembrance of one’s repeated earthly lives.

Of all of his works, The Philosophy of Spiritual Activity is the one that Steiner himself believed would have the longest life, and the greatest spiritual and cultural consequences. It was written as a phenomenological account of the results of observing the human soul, according to the methods of natural science.

What has to be imparted has been given in the form of eight meditations, which can be actually practiced. If this is done, they can be adapted for imparting to the soul, through its own inner-deepening, that about which they speak.

All listeners, atheist, agnostic or theist, will discover much of interest in Steiner's brilliant prose. In seinen frühesten Veröffentlichungen hat Rudolf Steiner den Versuch unternommen, aus den naturwissenschaftlichen Schriften Goethes diejenigen epistemologischen und wissenschaftstheoretischen Prinzipien herauszuarbeiten, die den Goethe'schen Arbeiten auf diesem Feld unausgesprochen zugrunde liegen. In der ›Die Philosophie der Freiheit‹ (Erstausgabe 1894, umgearbeitete und erweiterte Neuausgabe 1918) entwarf Steiner, ausgehend von seiner Deutung Goethes und des Deutschen Idealismus sowie in enger Verwandtschaft mit dem Individualismus Nietzsches und Stirners, eine systematische Rechtfertigung der inneren Erfahrung als legitimer Methode wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisgewinns und damit das grundlegende Legitimationstheorem der später von ihm ausgebildeten anthroposophischen Geisteswissenschaft.
