The Lost World is a classic adventure novel written by Arthur Conan Doyle. Professor George Edward Challenger, Edward Malone, Professor Summerlee, and Lord John Roxton, set out to explore a South America plateau where prehistoric animals, including dinosaurs still live. While investigating the lost world, they are attacked by pterodactyls at a swamp, narrowly miss being killed by dinosaurs, and are captured by a race of ape-men.

Two eccentric professors, a plucky sportsman, and an intrepid reporter explore the wilds of the Amazon valley in search of prehistoric animals. When their bridge to civilization collapses, they are surrounded by vicious beasts, savage ape-men, and gargantuan dinosaurs.

The 13 mysteries in this collection were originally published in The Strand Magazine and Collier's in Great Britain and the United States. Published in 1905, this book was the first Holmes collection since 1893, when Holmes died in a confrontation with his arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty in "The Final Problem". The success of The Hound of the Baskervilles, which was published in 1901-1902 and is set before Holmes's death, created great pressure on Doyle to revive his famous character.

In this region, cut off from the outside world by unscalable vertical cliffs and fetid swamps, they encounter a world where dinosaurs roam free and natives fight a murderous war with their fierce neighbors, the apemen. Trapped on the isolated plateau with only hunting rifles as protection the four must use savvy and intellect to escape from this primeval terror.

Joseph Habakuk Jephson, a soldier who was hurt in the Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War, is in convalescence. One day, an old Black maid offers him a Black oval-shaped stone which belonged to her ancestors. At the end of the war, Jephson gets married and establishes himself as a doctor in Brooklyn. Conan Doyle has been inspired by the real case of the ship Mary Celeste which was found drifting in the Atlantic off Portugal, under full sail but apparently abandoned.
