In this tale an underrespected chemist uses his skill to create a poison that is undetectable and mimics a fit of apoplexy or stroke, killing the victim. He convinces his employer, who has wronged him in many ways, that it is an elixir promising everlasting life and many other benefits. The boss is only too anxious to sample it, and it works only too well. Problem is, what to do with the supernumerary or extra corpse.

He survived by placating his tormentors. This Poul Anderson short story is a great study of humanity that will leave you with a lump in your throat at the end.

It is said that the observance of Memorial Day grew originally out of the custom of the widows, mothers, and children of the Confederate dead in the South strewing the soldiers' graves with flowers, including the unmarked graves of the Union soldiers. There was no settled date for this in the North until 1868, when General John A. Logan, as commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, designated May 30. One of the remarkable things about Fritz Leiber is the ease with which he writes any kind of story. Science fiction, fantasy, weird: You name it and he's done them all. Just think of "Gather, Darkness", "Scylla's Daughter", and (in the old Unknown) ''Smoke Ghost", and you'll see what we mean. In that last story parlicularly Leiber helped to modernize the tale of terror, to take it out of haunted castles and moldering graveyards and put it into the dark, nightmarish streets of a modern city. ''I'm Looking for Jeff", written much later, belongs in this same category.

But not the Captain, leading to a very interesting turn of events.

He loses his job, his car is repossessed, and no matter how hard he tries he can't seem to be hired anywhere. He has just signed up for his final unemployment check when he finally makes eye contact with the "Are You Ready Willing and Able to Work Sign Up Here Please Girl". She slips a note warning him that he is in danger and to meet her after work.
