"The Blind Man" is a delicate study of a loving relationship blighted by the man's blindness and disfigurement in the First World War. The arrival of an old friend of the woman brings into the open feelings and fears previously suppressed.

The story of the physical relationship between the aristocratic protagonist Constance Chatterley and gamekeeper Oliver Mellors - which occurs right under the nose of her wheelchair-bound husband, Clifford. In exploring the class system of the early 20th century, the novel also touches upon the declining coal mining industry, its effect on the workers, and the politics which surrounded it. Yet possibly the most important theme is the individual’s need for physical as well as intellectual satisfaction.

In this poignant exploration of a coal-miners family, we delve into the lives of each member Walter Morel, the hardworking collier; his wife Gertrude, who grapples with her husbands reckless ways; and their children William, Annie, Arthur, and Paul. As Mrs. Morel grows increasingly distant from Walter due to his poor financial decisions and drinking, she becomes deeply entwined in the lives of her children, particularly her sons. Conversations happen everywhere. A few words to pass the time or a detailed examination of views. But on trains they seem to be different. Speaking whilst in motion gives the whole discussion a momentum that often takes us into uncharted territory.

"Samson and Delilah" is set against a Cornish backdrop. Lawrence and his wife tried to settle in Cornwall during the First World War, but were hounded by the authorities and forced to leave. Lawrence pointedly describes the local people as "mindless" in this story. It is almost a Homeric story of a husband returning home after a long absence, having to fight to regain his wife. But in this story, it is the wife who is the obstacle. But she succumbs to the man's physical presence, as Lawrence demanded all women should if they were to attain happiness.

The descendents of the deceased horse dealer have fallen on hard times and are being evicted from the family stud farm. The three brothers and one sister are sitting around the breakfast table, discussing what each of them will do in the face of their sudden destitution. Only the horse dealer's daughter, Mabel, remains silent. She has made up her mind what to do...but will not communicate with the others. A visit from Jack Ferguson, the local doctor shifts the focus to this character.

D.H. Lawrence tells the story of Constance Reid, also known as Lady Chatterley, who is married to Sir Clifford Chatterley, an aristocrat who becomes paralyzed from the waist down during World War I. Their marriage suffers due to Sir Clifford's disability and his obsession with his writing and intellectual pursuits. Feeling neglected and emotionally isolated, Lady Chatterley begins an affair with the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors. Their passionate and physical relationship contrasts sharply with her cold, sterile marriage.

Sons and Lovers is widely considered by critics and readers alike as D.H. Lawrence’s masterpiece and a classic interpretation of the Oedipal complex. Surely one of the greatest autobiographical novels ever written, it tells the story of Paul Morel, a sensitive artist with a far stronger attachment to his mother than his working-class, alcoholic father. Searching for love and human connection, Paul is torn between two very different women, but neither of them measures up to his mother.

In Odour of Chrysanthemums D.H. Lawrence explores the concept of human isolation and the nature of love and relationships. This is the story of Elizabeth, a young wife and mother waiting for her alcoholic husband to return home from what she assumes is another night of drinking...

D. H. Lawrence’s homage to his travels in Mexico and the American southwest. The first four essays are products of a short visit to Oaxaca in Mexico. The following three, which include Lawrence’s classic account of the Hopi snake dance, are set in New Mexico. In the last essay, Lawrence remembers Saint Catherine’s Day at the ranch in Taos from the vantage point of his new residence in Italy. All are written in an inimitable style which combines acute observation and sardonic humour with Lawrence’s often eccentric views on culture and philosophy.

Lawrence wrote The Plumed Serpent between 1923 to 1924, a time when he was in ill health, living in Mexico, and becoming dependent on his wife Frieda. The plot revolves around a movement to replace the Christian God with the old pre-conquest gods, such as Quetzalcoatl, the plumed serpent of the title.

In The Fox, two young women living on a small farm during the First World War find their solitary life interrupted. As a fox preys on their poultry, a human predator plans to prey on the women. The Captain’s Doll explores the complex and intimate relationship between a German countess and a married Scottish soldier in occupied Germany, while in The Ladybird a wounded German prisoner of war has a disturbing and profound influence on the Englishwoman who visits him in the hospital.

Lady Chatterley's Lover, written in 1928, tells the story of a passionate love affair between an upper class woman and her husband’s gamekeeper, which was thought to be so shocking in its content and its straightforward use of explicit sexual terms, that it was not officially published until 1960.

Sons and Lovers was the first of Lawrence's major works, and is still considered to be one of his best. The 1913 novel, partly autobiographical and set in the coalmining village of Bestwood, is notable for being the first English novel to be genuinely working-class in origin and focus.

Written in 1926...and published posthumously [without the authors customary revision] in 1930, The Virgin and the Gypsy is a minor masterpiece in short story writing. It provides an excellent introduction to Lawrence’s work, being a succinct distillation of his ideas about sexuality and its ability to transcend class barriers. Yvette and her sister Lucille come back from finishing school in Lausanne with a much broader outlook on life than the inhabitants of the cloistered world to which they return.

Lawrence wrote three drafts of ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ between 1926 and 1928: ‘The First Lady Chatterley’s Lover', this audiobook, ‘John Thomas and Lady Jane’ and the final version, ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’. Although all three books have the same story line of an aristocratic woman falling in love with a working-class man, there are differences in their tone and sensibilities.

Sons and Lovers, Lawrence's third published novel, was written by the author at the height of his literary powers. The story of class differences (the relationship between a middle-class woman and a miner) in the tough world of coal mining brought a refreshing realism to literature. It remains a challenging text and is studied widely. It is particularly effective on audiobook in the hands of Nottinghamshire reader Paul Slack.
