A lesson on the power of vanity, "The Necklace" tells the story of Madame Mathilde Loisel and her husband. Mathilde always imagined herself as a socialite with beautiful gowns and wonderful jewels. Her husband, however, is a lowly clerk and the two have little money. Desperate to attend an important party, she borrows a friend's diamond necklace to match the dress her husband bought for her. But when Mathilde loses the expensive jewels, she nearly destroys her life in an effort to pay back the debt.

Guy de Maupassant is widely regarded as the father of the modern short story. As his 13 volumes of short stories attest, he was a prolific writer of this form. He had a simple, efficient style of writing and, like Anton Chekhov, found inspiration for his stories in the day-to-day lives of characters, in which their hidden natures are often revealed. Many of his works also centerd on the Franco-Prussian War, in which he served.

Two Friends is a short story by the French author Guy de Maupassant, published in 1883. The story is set in Paris in January 1871, during the Franco-Prussian War, when the city lay under siege.

"Boule de Suif" (1880) is a famous novella by Guy de Maupassant. The story is set in the Franco-Prussian War and follows a group of French residents of Rouen, recently occupied by the Prussian army. The ten travelers decide, for various reasons, to leave Rouen and flee to Le Havre in a stagecoach. Sharing the carriage are Boule de Suif or "Butterball", a prostitute; a strict Democrat; a shop-owning couple from the petty bourgeoisie; a wealthy upper-bourgeoisie factory-owner and his wife; the Comte and Comtesse of Bréville; and two nuns.

Mathilde Loisel, the lowly born wife of a clerk, has always felt she was meant for greater things. She imagines beautiful gowns, glittering parties, a home of opulence, and a life of comfort. Her only wish is to be flattered and admired, and she is miserable that she will never know that life. But out of the blue, her husband comes home with an invitation to a ball. She buys a new dress but mourns her lack of jewels. But wait!

The public mourns when a beloved magistrate dies, a man of upstanding character who had a reputation for bringing criminals to justice. Yet when our tale’s narrator stumbles upon the man’s diary, he discovers another side to this public servant. One entry reads: “It must be a pleasure, unique and full of zest, to kill.”

A stagecoach containing a microcosm of French society seek to escape to Le Havre during the Prussian war. Guy de Maupassant is renowned as one of the fathers of the modern short story. The most popular and perhaps the greatest of Maupassant's full-length novels, A Woman's Life is the story of the unfortunate Jeanne, a Norman gentlewoman. Avarice and lechery, cruelty and greed, conspire against Jeanne wherever she goes. Maupassant exposes the evil around Jeanne with characteristic detachment and precision, yet his pessimism is, as always, qualified by passages of great lyric beauty, and by the touching sympathy and tenderness with which he portrays his heroine.
