Venne definito dall'autore un romanzo-studio "psicologico e fidiologico", in riferimento alla complessità caratteriale dei personaggi, sui cui comportamenti si incentra l'analisi dello scrittore. Tutti i personaggi agiscono comunque per egoismo: mamma Raquin cresce la nipote in funzione di suo figlio, soffocandone la personalità per farle poi sposare il figlio inetto.

Cuando en 1894 se descubrió que alguien estaba traicionando al ejército francés, un fraudulento consejo de guerra condenó a un oficial judío, el capitán Dreyfus. Indignado ante esta injusticia, Zola intervino con la única arma de que dispone un intelectual: la pluma. Su violento Yo acuso le valió la condena a un año de prisión y despertó reacciones desgarradas.
