Jessi is honored - and surprised - when she's asked to participate in a synchronized swimming competition. Sure, Jessi knows ballet. But water ballet is a different story. Stacey quits the club, but suddenly realizes that her new "friends" are using her as a cover for their drinking, shoplifting, and other ideas of summer fun.

Accepting a job as companion to a 12-year-old girl with Down's Syndrome, Dawn finds an unexpected friend in Whitney, and struggles with the fear that Whitney may not understand if she learns that Dawn is being paid to be with her.

Kristy's not too happy with some things at Stoneybrook Middle School. The hot lunches, for example, look like dog food, and Mary Poppins is such a babyish choice for their annual play. What the eighth grade really needs is a new class president. Someone who's organized and has great ideas - someone like Kristy! To a New York City girl like Stacey, the fact that an old - supposedly haunted - house in Stoneybrook is being torn down is no big deal. And when the votes come in, the results are clear: Claudia's not just adjusting to seventh grade, she's ruling it!
