Die Geschichte handelt von Gregor Samsa, dessen plötzliche Verwandlung in ein Ungeziefer die Kommunikation seines sozialen Umfelds mit ihm immer mehr hemmt, bis er von seiner Familie für untragbar gehalten wird und schließlich zugrunde geht. Mit einem Umfang von rund 70 Druckseiten handelt es sich um die längste der von Kafka für abgeschlossen gehaltenen und zu seinen Lebzeiten veröffentlichten Erzählungen.

The Metamorphosis (German: Die Verwandlung, also sometimes translated as The Transformation) is a novella by Franz Kafka, first published in 1915. The story begins with a traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, waking to find himself transformed (metamorphosed) into a large, monstrous insect-like creature.

Georg Bendemann hat einen Bekannten in Russland, der vor langer Zeit dorthin gezogen ist. Sie stehen in Briefkontakt. Der Freund ist vereinsamt und Georg hat Mitleid mit ihm. Deshalb verschweigt er dem Freund lange die geplante Hochzeit, um diesen nicht noch unglücklicher zu machen, bis er sich eines Tages dazu durchringt. Er erzählt seinem Vater von dieser Entscheidung, welcher darauf sehr unerwartet reagiert: Er wirft ihm vor, den Freund vertrieben, den Vater hintergangen, und sich nur um sein eigenes Glück gekümmert zu haben. Der Vater verdammt seinen Sohn zum Tod des Ertrinkens, woraufhin Georg das Urteil des Vaters selbst vollstreckt.

Der Tuchhändler Gregor Samsa erwacht eines Morgens in Gestalt eines riesigen Käfers. Seine Familie reagiert schockiert und hilflos, hatte er doch bislang für ihrer aller Unterhalt gesorgt. Anfangs pflegen und füttern sie ihren ehemaligen Sohn und Bruder noch, doch mehr und mehr überwiegt der Ekel vor dem Ungeheuer. Die Situation eskaliert, als Gregor von seinem Vater lebensbedrohlich verletzt wird. Gregors Verwandlung ist ein stiller Aufschrei gegen Ohnmacht und Unmenschlichkeit in der modernen Welt.

The story is set in an unnamed penal colony. In the Penal Colony describes the last use of an elaborate torture and execution device that carves the sentence of the condemned prisoner on his skin in a script before letting him die, all in the course of 12 hours. As the plot unfolds, the listener learns more and more about the machine, including its origin, and original justification.
