Before becoming a singer he was Bette Midler's accompanist and arranger.

Deputy editor-in-chief of the Columbian newspaper El Tiempo, Enrique Santos Calderon, and actress Christina Ricci on this edition of Fresh Air. El Tiempo is one of Columbia's leading dailies. Calderon will talk about putting out a newspaper under the threat of kidnapping, torture, or death from leftist guerillas and right wing paramilitary groups. In Columbia, more journalists have been killed in the past five years than in any other country.

It's a series of case histories that examine the relationship of music and the mind. Professor Charles Kupchan and TV host and writer Ruby Wax on this edition of Fresh Air. Charles Kupchan's new book, "The End of the American Era: U.S. Foreign Policy and the Geopolitics of the Twenty-First Century, Kupchan argues that the era of American dominance may be coming to an end; this demise will not be brought on by the Islamic world or China but from an integrated Europe.

Writer Michael Patrick Hearn and columnist Stanley Bing on this edition of Fresh Air. Michael Patrick Hearn is the editor of The Annotated Wizard of Oz: A Centennial Edition. The book commemorates the 100th anniversary of the publication of L. Frank Baum's classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Back in 1900, the first 10,000 copies printed of Baum's book sold out in two weeks. Baum wrote fourteen Oz books in all.

Actress Christine Baranski and garbage expert Benjamin Miller on this edition of Fresh Air. Baranski is probably best known for her work on the TV series Cybill, in which she played Maryann, the best friend of Cybill Shepherd. She's currently starring in the TV sitcom Welcome to New York. She also plays Martha May Whovier in the new film Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Father James Martin on this edition of Fresh Air. Father Martin is associate editor of America the national Catholic magazine. He's written a new memoir, Searching for God at Ground Zero, about the days following the September 11th attacks when he abandoned his editing duties to go and be with the rescue workers at the site of the ruined World Trade Center.

Hear novelist Philip Roth, film critic David Edelstein, and TV critic David Bianculli on this edition of Fresh Air. The Pulitzer Prize winning author's 27th book, Everyman, is now out in paperback. It's a novel about a 71-year-old, divorced, successful, advertising man and his response to his physical decline and approaching death.

Hear actor and producer Paul Rudd and music critic Milo Miles on this edition of Fresh Air. Paul Rudd produced and stars in the new independent film The Ten, which is a series of irreverent vignettes that reinterpret the Ten Commandments for a modern audience. Rudd is also in the film Knocked Up, and he stars in the upcoming movie I Could Never Be Your Woman with Michelle Pfeiffer.

Jimmy Wales; comics Aziz Ansari, Rob Huebel, and Paul Scheer; and music critic Milo Miles are the guests on this edition of Fresh Air. Jimmy Wales is the co-creator of the interactive online encyclopedia Wikipedia, which was founded in 2001. Readers of Wikipedia write and edit the entries themselves. The site also has its own editors. Some entries, including the one on the "2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict" have been edited more than 4,000 times.

The Office of Legal Counsel advises the president on the limits of executive power. Jack Goldsmith resigned as head after nine months. During his tenure, he battled the Bush White House on the infamous "torture memos" and issues of surveillance and the trial of suspected terrorists.

Hear historian Raymond Arsenault, critic-at-large John Powers, and film critic David Edelstein, on this edition of Fresh Air. In Raymond Arsenault's book Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice, Arsenault recounts how an integrated group of self-proclaimed freedom riders challenged segregation by riding together on buses through the deep South.

Ricks has worked for the Washington Post since 2000, and prior to that, he wrote for the Wall Street Journal.

Author James Reston, Jr. and film director Jules Dassin on this edition of Fresh Air. James Reston, Jr.'s new book is Warriors of God: Richard the Lionheart and Saladin in the Third Crusade. It's the story of the battle for the Holy Land in the late 12th century. It begins as a dual biography of Saladin, the Sultan of Egypt, Syria, Arabia and Mesopotamia, and Richard I, King of England, known as the Lionheart. The two men led the battling Islamic and Christian armies.

Novelist Francine Prose and singer and guitarist Alex Chilton on this edition of Fresh Air. Prose's new book Blue Angel echoes the title of the film classic.

Filmmakers Peter and Bobby Farrell on this edition of Fresh Air. The two brothers have become practically the brand name for bad taste. Their movies Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, There's Something About Mary, and Shallow Hal, plumbed new depths of tastelessness.
