S.J. Tilly
New York Times Bestselling Author S.J. Tilly Brings us a brand new series. VOLIK—Bonded Souls Book One
Forget what you think you know. Forget the fairy tales and lore of old. Vampires are real. And for the past seventy years, they’ve walked openly among us. They’re bigger and stronger than humans, with black eyes, horns, and powers that shouldn’t be possible.
Volik is one of these vampires. Living in the small town of Hemlock Hills, he spends his days locked in his office at Stalden University. Wasting time. Waiting. Until Nix, the new journalism professor, arrives … and changes everything.
This is the story about the day they met. What happened after. And how their bond started a sequence of events that changed the world.
NIX
It’s my first day as a substitute professor. I’m in a new city, with new coworkers, and all I want to do is keep my head down. And maybe catch a glimpse of Volik.
I’ve read everything there is to read about vampires. The good and the scary. But I have all semester to sneak a look, so I focus my attention on the clock. Because in three minutes, I turn thirty.
But when the moment strikes, an invisible force slams into me. Weight swells inside my chest, and heat roars through my veins.
VOLIK
I pause, feeling a shift in the air, telling me something is about to happen. Then the clock ticks. And my world tilts.
The power inside me pulses. The building shakes around me. And I grow. I get bigger. Taller. Stronger. Thicker. My fangs lengthen. Sharpen. And I smile. Because the moment I have waited centuries for has finally arrived. The other half of my soul… She is here.
NIX
Screams echo down the hallway while people flee. Impossibly heavy footsteps shake the ground. But I don’t run. I can’t. The pull in my chest won’t allow it. Then the giant vampire I’ve been daydreaming about ducks through the doorway. And when he calls me his Mate, I do the opposite of run.
I reach for him.

Me (enlightened) today: VOLIK OH MY GOD
I honestly should have known that the exact thing I needed in my life was for SJ Tilly to release a fated mates paranormal romance. And I *definitely* should have known that I needed Sean Masters and Chloe Ryan narrating it in duet. I’ve only heard Chloe once before but she’s amazing. Sean is one of the most talented male narrators in the genre and he absolutely showed UP for Volik.
This one is for the girls whose neurodivergence would jump for joy IMMEDIATELY at finding a fated mate because they get to KNOW the other person’s emotions with absolute certainty when that is otherwise something their brain struggles to understand. And for readers who want to really see that be explored as an essential part of the plot. Yes there will be external conflict later in the book but Nix and Volik finding each other and learning what their bond is was about the first half of the book and I thought built a strong foundation for the external conflict. And this is the Bonded Souls series so I’m thrilled to have experienced so much of their souls bonding!!! Seriously, Nix and Volik were like a balm on my neurodivergent soul.
I can’t wait for more of this series. And SJ, if you’re reading this, I would DEFINITELY read an Uncle and Aunt prequel ;)
DUET-NARRATED PERFECTION

But the lore wasn’t even what hooked me most. It was the waiting.
Volik has spent centuries in this quiet, steady holding pattern. He was not searching or not yearning. He was just existing. So, when his mate finally appears, the moment hits like a natural disaster. The ground shakes, people panic, and everything in him snaps into alignment. For someone who’s held himself together for lifetimes, it feels exactly right.
And Nix? Instant favorite. She’s not posturing or trying to be tough. She’s curious, a little nerdy about vampires, and just trying to survive day one at a new job before fate detonates her life. What sold me was her instinct: when chaos erupts, she doesn’t bolt from Volik. She moves toward him. That tiny choice says everything.
The whole book hums with inevitability. Once these two collide, the fallout feels bigger than either of them. Their connection sparks something massive, something that’s clearly going to reshape the world around them.
And listen… a vampire who goes bigger, stronger, and more feral the second he finds his mate? That awakened something I wasn’t prepared for.
By the end, I wasn’t just thinking about the romance. I was thinking about the consequences. This feels like the opening move in a much larger game, and I’m already itching for whatever comes next.
Exactly the reaction Tilly was aiming for.
Where do I sign up for a Volik?
