When the People's Republic of China unleashes a devastating attack on the United States, newly appointed Navy Commander Bill Wilkins and his crew are suddenly alone, deep in the enemy's backyard, and unable to communicate with naval or national leadership.

At home in Washington, the president is detached from reality. Survivors of his cabinet contend with military leadership for control, some to save the nation they serve, others in pursuit of personal power.

As America becomes alienated from her allies, Russia begins a campaign that creates heightened fears of nuclear annihilation.

Bill must navigate a political minefield to find friends among China's neighbors while undertaking a role that demands he take unimaginable risks and wrestle with the question, What losses are acceptable in order to win?

After the People’s Republic of China launches a devastating attack on the United States, newly promoted Navy Commander Bill Wilkins and his crew find themselves stranded deep in hostile territory, cut off from military command and forced to survive on their own. Back in Washington, a fractured government struggles for control as political ambition, military conflict, and global instability push the world toward possible nuclear war. As America becomes increasingly isolated from its allies, Bill must forge dangerous alliances near enemy territory while confronting the brutal question of how much can be sacrificed in order to win.

The author, Thomas M. Wing, delivers a highly engaging military thriller that balances intense action with believable realism. The military operations, tactical decisions, and combat sequences feel authentic and well-researched, strengthening both the tension and emotional impact of the story. Action scenes are written with clarity and intensity, allowing readers to fully visualize the danger, chaos, and pressure facing the characters without becoming overly technical or difficult to follow.
The dialogue feels natural throughout, particularly within the military interactions, helping the characters feel believable rather than stereotypical. The characters themselves are well-developed, with personal motivations, fears, and moral conflicts that add emotional depth to the larger geopolitical crisis unfolding around them. The author also taps into modern fears surrounding global instability, military escalation, and the possibility of large-scale international conflict, making the storyline feel timely and unsettlingly plausible. Combined with the relentless pacing and high-stakes tension, the result is a riveting reading experience that keeps readers invested from beginning to end.

The narrator, GM Hakim, delivers a highly engaging performance that brings the story and its emotional weight fully to life. Each character is given a distinct and recognizable voice, allowing conversations and interactions to feel natural and easy to follow even during fast-moving or high-pressure scenes. The variations in tone, cadence, and emotional delivery strengthen the personalities of the characters while adding depth to the overall performance.

Hakim also captures the fear, authority, and urgency woven throughout the story with authenticity and conviction. Moments of danger and military confrontation carry strong emotional impact, while quieter scenes maintain the underlying suspense driving the narrative forward. The delivery remains smooth and well-paced throughout, keeping the storyline moving steadily while allowing key moments to fully resonate. Overall, the narration adds tremendous immersion to the audiobook, making it a compelling and riveting listening experience.

Blending high-stakes military action, political tension, believable characters, and powerful narration, this audiobook delivers an immersive and suspense-filled experience that will strongly appeal to fans of realistic military and geopolitical thrillers.

With start-to-finish tension and mastery of explaining technical details, Thomas Wing crafts a story that unfolds in the immediate aftermath of an unprovoked strike against the USA. Following the brave crew of a navy destroyer, we get a front row seat to an action-packed, military-focused, series of events pushing the boundaries of discipline, trust, betrayal, and greed set in a very present day. Characters are fully developed and presented with a crisp and well-paced narration. From the first chapter I was immediately hooked and didn't want to pause for any reason. Against All Enemies has solidly placed itself among the top books I've listened to in the past year. [Disclosure: I received this title for free and listened at 1.85x.]

Present day military nightmare unfolds

Mr. Wing has crafted a frightening portrayal of what COULD happen were the president to continue forward with his economic, cultural, and diplomatic attacks on the PRC. Parts of this book have already come true. I certainly hope the rest remains fictional!
In previous times, I'd have considered Mr. Wing's portrayal of Washington insiders as a bit over the top, but they are no longer. As a former military man myself, I have seen what happens to those on the pointy end of the spear when Washington hides information, or goes off the rails. Thus, this story is both relatable, and well-crafted.
His scenes aboard ship must have been drawn from his own experiences. They are excellent, and I believe give us an insider's look at how war at sea is fought. The tension is high and the stakes are life and death. Well done!
Finally, the narration and production value are also excellent. Mr. Hakim seems to capture the characters well, and his voicing is easy to listen to, and follow.
Overall, I strongly recommend this title.

I thought I wasn't realy a fan of military books but this book kept my attention. I found engaging. The similarities to current times is at times thought provoking.

Military greatness!!

The author should have stuck with the naval battles. His writing is very captivating and creative. When he got lost on his political rants about political leaders he doesn’t like the book because plain dumb. He then draws in the Army and Air Force as equal political stooges. Other land war facts are very inaccurate. He states China used sub-sonic missiles. To reach NORAD that is 2 hours. Many of our AF airbase would be over an hour.

Naval war was great. Political and land was far fetched.
