Full of grit, humor, and a mystical urban romanticism, this debut book of prose from a poet soars through a landscape of broken hearts, broken machines, and the strident desire to live a fiercely uncommon life. From New Orleans to New York City and the miles of lost highway in between, Dickinson illuminates a colorful universe as it unfolds behind the wheel of these banged up yet beloved hunks of steel.

A highly entertaining romp through a splintered reality. Worth it just for the insane tales of NYC from a bygone era. Strongly recommended!

Dickinson writes as though his hair were on fire. Or his car, rather. He'll bring you "to another level of sanity via insanity." The book is full of all sorts of those vicarious not-so-contradictories, like feeling "an agression so pure that after the 16th time it put me at total peace." What a trip. What a romp. Coudn't recommend more highly

The stories are brilliant, amusing, and easy to relate to, but the narration is distracting. With the least of the offences being some words slurred together, the rhythm and breath pauses continually fall in the wrong places, sometimes mid-word. If I wasn't told of the self narration, I would have thought that this was a first draft read-through by an amateur. The intro is unedited, in which she stops, asks someone to quiet down, then starts the sentence over. The only redeeming factor of this title is the well-written content.

Should have hired a narrator

I have driven a junker just long enough to know that I needed to earn enough money so that I never had to drive or rely on another one ever again. Dickinson's eloquently written stories of his opposite approach to life are entertaining and encouraging. Should the apocalypse occur, it appears that one could, indeed, survive and even thrive relying on the fact that when one junker dies, another one is right around the corner bearing it's own anecdotes, stories and adventures; keeping it real, if not entertaining.
