The dragon chose her. The rider would claim her. The fae would use her. To fight for herself, she may have to watch the world burn.

Sole survivor of a magical catastrophe that fractured the Barrier and killed the men she loved, Annika swore never to take another bond. To stay hidden from those who crave her power, she fakes her death and vanishes into obscurity.

But her magic is restless. A dragon haunts her dreams, and monsters are slipping through the cracks in the Barrier her magic created.

When a brutal attack forces her hand, Annika reveals the truth she's fought to bury—drawing the attention of the ruthless Commander of the Dragon Riders and his dark fae Necromancer.

Both are men of war, forged in blood and duty. Their touch may be gentle, their eyes kind, but to them, she is a weapon—the first woman ever chosen by a dragon, whose magic cannot be contained by one bond alone.

Torn between the Commander, who ignites her power, and the Necromancer, who tempers its inferno, Annika must decide if her heart can bear another bond...

If she denies it, the Barrier will fall, and the kingdom she swore to protect will burn to ash.

A multi-POV slow-burn romantic epic fantasy with a dark Slavic twist, unique magic, dragons, forced proximity, and enchanting world-building. Perfect for fans of The Bridge Kingdom, Blood and Steel, and The Witcher.

I've read this book, and everything this author writes is full of color, depth, and world building that creates movies in your mind. This audiobook does the book justice - it was like experiencing something completely new. If you were only to purchase one audiobook this year, I would recommend this be the one. I also encourage you to read all the other books by this author.

Audiobook Thoughts: This dual narration audiobook is voiced by Vincent Skye and Olivia Wright, and produced by Podium Entertainment. I’ve been so excited to hear this favorite story brought to life - and it definitely didn’t disappoint. The narrators poured so much emotion into the characters and their interactions. The male narrator did well at differentiating between the three male characters he voiced.

The Lovely: This book had it all so it’s a struggle to narrow down the lovely things. The FMC is a total baddie but is also struggling after suffering immense loss - the kind some people don’t come back from. She meets the two MMCs at this point in her life and it doesn’t seem like their arrangement is going to be workable for anyone involved. I loved how their relationship develops (which is to say, slowly) and the push and pull between them. Sometimes it very much felt like three steps forward for the characters and then two steps back. This packs an emotional impact that left me feeling right along with them, especially the FMC.

Also Lovely: I also loved the world building, which is rooted in Slavic lore and mythology. There are dragons and monstrous creatures interwoven within a unique magic system. Even some of the names and words are other-worldly, which led to an immersive experience.

Recommendation: If you like why choose fantasy romance with an intricate but understandable world, and all the emotional impact, I think you would love this book. It does end on quite the cliffhanger after a well-tensioned plot flowed through the story. The ending has me so mad at the villains! So mad! Book two, Oath of War, is due to be released in audiobook form in early May 2026.

Oath of Betrayal Audio was just as good as the book and I knew this was going to wreck me just as much. Listening to the voice actors bringing Alaric, Ormond, Vahain, and Annika to live was amazing. I am definitely looking forward to Oath of War now.

Storytelling brought to life

Whelp, I wasn't expecting to fall in love but now I have two new book boyfriends. The character depth completely wrecked me in all the best ways and I'm eager to see what happens in the next book. You can't tell me these characters aren't real life because they were absolute written perfection. Their hardships, flaws, goals and personalities all came across and MELTED me. I loved the fantasy and lore, the worldbuilding, the tension, the trauma and growth so far.

I did a mix of audio and reading and the voice actors were both incredible. While the male narrator did an impressive job handling both the male POVs, like I'm full on addicted, the female narrator also really blew me away. She made the FMC her own and really brought her to life with the perfect tone and emotion. I loved how snarky the FMC was but in a mature and fascinating way. You really can see why she is the way she is and the banter was top notch. I had a lot of laughing fits. It really was one of those stories you fall into and want to stay inside. I breezed through it and couldn't put it down. New obsession unlocked.

And now onto book 2...

Phenomenal - emotionally raw and epic worldbuilding

I enjoyed the world building and the characters but there wasn’t much substance to the story.

The lack of dual narration.
