The world's bestselling crime writer Patricia Cornwell presents the extraordinary eighteenth novel in the Kay Scarpetta series, in which Kay Scarpetta is confronted with a case that could ruin her professionally and personally.

Kay Scarpetta has been training at the Dover Port Mortuary, mastering the art of 'virtual autopsy'—a groundbreaking procedure that could soon revolutionise forensic science. And it is not too long before these new skills urgently need to be put into practice. A young man drops dead, apparently from a heart condition, eerily close to Scarpetta's home. But when his body is examined the next morning, there are stunning indications that he may have been alive when he was zipped inside a pouch and locked in the cooler.

When the revolutionary 3D radiology scans reveal more shocking details about internal injuries unlike any Scarpetta has ever seen, she realizes that this is a case of murder—and that she is fighting a cunning and uniquely cruel enemy. Now it is a race against time to discover who and why before more people die. But that time is running out . . .

I don't know this wasn't her best book or at least my opinion wasn't her best book

the readers were different from her normal readers

I even double checked to make sure it wasn’t a virtual voice. I am 7 chapters in and thinking of quitting. I slowed the speed a little , which helped a bit, but not sure it is enough. The tone is so different, I initially thought it was the wrong series.

Well, I finished it but it was a real chore. I found myself confused often, And bored. My least favorite of the series so far.

This narrator is killing me

Great book, what i actually listened to, the narrator is so monotonous! very little inflection, weird voices for men, and everything always ends with low energy like and forlorn sigh.

Great book and story as always

Patricia Cornwell's kay scarpetta is as wonderful as ever but I cannot get through this narrator. I understand the certain ways that kay talks but this woman is I don't know anyway I folded 30 minutes in I tried two different times I just cannot listen to this woman any longer too bad because Patricia Cornwell is my favorite author

can't get through this narrator

I liked that PC went back to speaking in the first person. However, at times, it was difficult - almost exhausting - to follow her internal thoughts vs narration. Also, unlike the previous narrator who made Lucy sound like she was on testosterone’s, this narrator, while doing a great job with Scarpetta, made Marino sound weak and Benton sound perpetually tired/high. Not a fan of all the political references about the Reagan and Apartheid. All that said, the story line was excellent. Love that she kept Sock and that animals bring out a less turbulent, conflicted side of Scarpetta.

Hard to follow
