The Winslow Farm is a dying slice of Americana. Run by the “Princess of Pork,” Beulah Belle Winslow, the farm has seen better days. Along with her deformed daughter Hattie, Beulah performs unspeakable acts to keep the farm running. But will they be able to keep their dark secrets hidden, or will the sins of the farm be thrust into the light?

Davey is a scumbag, and his father makes sure he knows it. With the threat of jail looming, he needs to secure a job to keep his probation officer off his case. When Davey takes a farmhand job at the Winslow Farm, he soon realizes jail might not be the worst fate.

JD, Ari, Rich, and Danielle just want to finish out their senior year on the sunny beaches of Florida, but a flat tire puts a damper on their plans. With limited funds, and nowhere to turn, the teens find themselves stuck in an old hunting cabin on the Winslow Farm. They soon find out that the screams from the slaughterhouse are nothing compared to what lurks in the woods.

Favoritism exists for the author, Mr. Volpe never fails to suck me into his stories and while I'm there in the Upside Down, my body is turned into knots from wretching, squealing, and shivering. Volpe's story is a wild vortex of vile, villainous, and vengeful happening on a pig farm that a mother and daughter can't escape. But that's okay. It's not just them. There's a whole cast of characters that find themselves there and shocker; it ends horribly for them. Even the pigs.

But for Volpe fans, there is an Easter egg or two and we're in a fan favorite's universe.

What I love about Volpe's writing is while dark, he never misses an opportunity to say something important in his stories. Yes they are gorey and full of shock, but there's that lens of how we treat each other. This one highlights childhood trauma and how that is passed on. How without education, a person can be limited or even trapped. And, how bodies and beauty can be commodities and exploited for selfish gains. Or maybe I'm just a nerd and reading way too much into a Splatterpunk story.

As this is an audiobook, I can't forget the voice actor who did an amazing job bringing this story to life. Great interpretation of the work!

All I'm saying is you should read this book. Feel uncomfortable, but also have a great time doing it.
