From the bestselling author of the wildly inventive Strange Pictures and a phenomenon in Japan—unnatural layouts, trap doors, windowless rooms— a sinister conspiracy is concealed within a house’s warped and unsettling floor plans

When a writer fascinated by the macabre is approached by an acquaintance, he finds himself investigating an eerie house for sale in Tokyo. At first, with its bright and spacious interior, it seems the perfect first home. But upon closer inspection, the building’s floor plans reveal a mysterious "dead space” hidden between its walls. Seeking a second opinion, the writer shares the floor plans with his friend Kurihara, an architect, only to discover more unnerving details throughout.

What is the true purpose behind the house’s disturbing design? And what happened to the former owners who disappeared without a trace? When a body suddenly appears and a young woman reaches out about a second house, it soon becomes clear that the writer and his friend may be in over their heads. Structured around a series of chilling floorplans, with Strange Houses, mystery-horror YouTube sensation Uketsu casts readers in the role of detective, inviting them to help map out the truth hidden within these puzzling floor plans . . . and the terrifying plot behind it all.

From the beginning, the book has you wondering what the heck is going on, in a good way. However, you have to sit, listen and look at the accompanying pictures to understand. It took me a while to get through this book bc of that aspect. Then in the second half of the book more characters were introduced and I had such a hard time following. I think reading would’ve been the better choice for this book. Seeing the names would’ve made it easier to follow than just hearing them. I had to google who was who to figure out what was going on lol. Overall the plot was really interesting and I had no idea what would happen next.

You really have to sit down & pay attention

I have the Japanese version of the book and it is wonderful. Thereader is great but would have been better with having a female reader to better immerse listener to the story.

simple criticism

This is a great book and translation, but I’d highly recommend just buying the print version of this book honestly, The performance by the narrator is excellent, but there are so many visuals and diagrams that the reader would need to double check while reading, all in the accompanying PDF. This isn’t a good book to listen to while driving or doing chores.

Great story, but a bit too dependent on PDF / visuals

This was such a fresh read and listen. I'm usually not a mystery fan but this entire story had me evaluating and speculating on the outcomes the whole time! Looking forward to strange buildings
