How does marriage work? If convention is set aside and is no longer there to guide...what then?

The instant Captain Declan Frobisher lays eyes on Lady Edwina Delbraith, he knows she's the woman he wants as his wife. The scion of a seafaring dynasty accustomed to success, he discovers that wooing Edwina is surprisingly straightforward - not least because she makes it plain that she wants him as much as he wants her.

Declan's vision of marriage is of a gently reared wife to grace his arm, manage his household, and bear his children. He assumes that the household, children, and wife will remain safely in England while he continues his life as an explorer sailing the high seas, and he gets his wish - up to a point. He and Edwina are wed, but the rest of his vision doesn't turn out the way he expected.

Even before the knot is tied, Edwina shatters the illusion that her character is as delicate, ethereal, and fragile as her appearance suggests. Far from adhering to orthodox mores, she and her ducal family are even more unconventional than the Frobishers. Beneath her fairy-princess exterior, Edwina possesses a spine of steel - one that might bend but will never break. So mere weeks into their honeymoon, when Declan is required to sail to West Africa, Edwina knows she must accompany him.

A secret mission with unknown villains flings unexpected dangers into their path as Declan and Edwina discover that making an unconventional marriage work requires something they both possess: bold and adventurous hearts.

I'll start by saying I don't read or listen to much of this genre but I was drawn to it because of the narrator. Sadly, it just wasn't the book for me.
What I did love was Edwina. She was the one pulling the strings in that relationship, for the most part. I loved that she did what she wished and didn't always listen when Declan told her no. Whatever it was, she was doing it. She was definitely a spitfire and a good complement to her husband.
The narration really saved the book for me. Steve West did a fantastic job with every single character and showed every emotion they were feeling. I'm sure it's not easy to solo narrate but Steve does it with ease.

Not a bad story, just not my thing

I did not realize that I had not read book 1 in the Adventurers Quartet series so I was excited that this was available in Audible Escapes. The narrator, Steve West, was really great and the storyline kept my interest, especially since I already knew the outcome of the mystery involved.

The premise to The Lady’s Command was actually an interesting one. The main characters, Declan and Edwina, had just gotten married and are already pretty much in love with each other. I actually did not have too much of a problem with that, but I do normally look forward to the chase and conflict. We do see a bit of a disturbance to their happily ever after when Declan is called away to assist regarding some missing men in Freetown in West Africa and pretty much forbids Edwina from coming along. Edwina, who is determined to share their whole lives, good and bad, decides to stow away onto the ship. Once they arrive in Freetown, Declan realizes what a help Edwina can be with his mission.

Since this is the first book of four so you really will not find out who and why the men, women and children are missing but you do get to see how well both Declan and Edwina work together and see what a wonderful match they truly are.

A wonderful start to a great series

Declan received orders to investigate missing persons in an area where even spies have gone missing. Edwina decided to stowaway on her husband’s ship only realizing that it is a dangerous mission. Edwina Wants to assist her husband and they are a team. Together they find out who some of the culprits are. Enjoyable story with Steve West narrating.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I always recommend Stephanie Laurens book, this one included.

What did you like best about this story?

I love how Stephanie incorporated the Black Cobra ( a favorite series) into the story line.

What three words best describe Steve West’s voice?

Steve West was an excellent narrator. Very easy to listen to and the variety of changes to his voice was just right.

Any additional comments?

I found the editing of the audio the least favorite of this book. There were several incidents where the previous line was repeated.

Love Stephanie Laurens. The story was great/

slow and methodical. More mildly pleasant than anything else. I found it a good book to induce relaxation and slumber. I have enjoyed this Author before. And it's not unusual to like some books more than others.
